January 2009 Archives

This last month has been all about the art show at Gather Gallery and Kumi was dragged around town in search of supplies. Once my mom arrived from Los Angeles on January 6, we practically lived at the gallery to set everything up. The January 10th opening went swimmingly and we braved several near-disasters prior to the big day (severe temper tantrums by an utterly bored 2-year-old, a painting that came tumbling down from the wall, etc.). Above are some of the white dresses that I thought looked pretty while we were steam cleaning all the dresses. You can see all the dresses on the Gather website here. You can see larger versions when you click on "Dress Details and Bidding Information".

Here's Kumi standing in front of the wall of dresses. This was before we re-arranged everything and wanted to just get the dresses all up. It was very late and the gallery was pretty dark...

We got one of the dresses framed:

We worked with a fabulous stylist that came up with these paper dolls in the tree installations that were already in the gallery (the paintings below are my mom's):

The opening was so much fun! Lots of people came and I got to see so many friends I haven't seen in a while, which was such a treat. My mom and I were thrilled to see so many folks bidding on the dresses and we sold quite a few paintings on opening day alone! Here's a shot of MF and Kumi wandering around just before the opening. You can kind of see the set up on the other wall with the bidding chalkboard, the paintings and the poster of the dresses in the silver frame.

Here are slightly better images of the paper cut outs and a sampling of the paintings that I did.

All in all it was a fantastic experience. My first ever art show! And my mom was so thrilled to share her handmade dresses for such a good cause. Spread the word! Bid on dresses through the Gather blog! Proceeds will go to the Boys and Girls Club and Food Bank of Seattle. I realize these may not be charitable organizations that speak to all people, but the dresses are pieces of art that are worth acquiring for their own sake.

Oh, and here's a pix of Kumi who has been a trooper all month with her crazy mama staying up all hours and depriving her of much needed attention:

A big thank you to Jenn, Josie and Megan of Gather Gallery for making the whole process so much fun. And thank you to all my friends and everyone who came to the opening. And the biggest thank you to my mom for making all those dresses.

Ah...now I get to catch up on some zzzzs.
